‘Singing the story’ of Alzheimer’s

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — One does not have to look far to find someone impacted by the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. The neurological illness is the fifth leading cause of death in Americans aged 65 and older.

According to data provided by the Alzheimer’s Association, nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million.

In an effort to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, to inspire hope for those caring for someone diagnosed with the disease, and to comfort to those who have lost a loved one to its effects, the Sullivan County Community Chorus will present a concert titled, “Alzheimer’s Stories,” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Tri-Valley Central School’s Bernstein Theatre.

This special event is a benefit concert for the Hudson Valley chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The concert will feature a selection of moving musical pieces highlighting the impact of the disease from varying perspectives. Listeners will hear Robert Cohen’s composition “Alzheimer’s Stories,” performed with the chamber orchestra and Joey Breslau and Nicole Rizzo, soloists from the Bard College Vocal Arts Program and students of the Metropolitan Opera’s Stephanie Blythe.

The performance will include testimonials and reflections, and community support resources will also be available to guests.

You can honor a loved one, alive or deceased, by including their name on the Alzheimer’s Honor Roll. The cost is $20 per person to be honored. Send the name(s) and check to Alzheimer’s Honor Roll, c/o Kevin Giroux, 7349 State Rte. 42, Grahamsville, NY 12740.

The venue has ample parking space and is handicapped accessible. Admission is a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $5 for students.

The Sullivan County Community Chorus, directed by Kevin Giroux and accompanied by Keira Weyant, is composed of a diverse membership of community members who find joy in making music together. The chorus has performed at various local venues as well as at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Membership is open to all within the Sullivan County region.

The theatre is located at 34 Moore Hill Rd.
