NARROWSBURG, NY — A new exhibition at the Narrowsburg Union’s Digital Gallery brings the black-box space to life, using its screens and projectors to highlight the natural beauty of a small corner of Wayne County, PA.

“Where I Live” is an exhibition put together by photographer, filmmaker and installation artist Eddie Marritz. The work inhabits all three worlds. A film projected at one end of the gallery anchors the installation. A set of black-and-white photos fan out along the other walls of the room, perpendicular to the screen: to the left, they’re displayed as a set of prints; to the right, they’re displayed in a slideshow on the digital picture frames of the galaxy.

The film at the exhibition’s heart is an enthralling loop of close-up water shots. Water ripples, waterfalls and rushes in streams and over rocks. The whole film was shot in slow motion, creating an engaging, unsettling effect: you can’t immediately detect what is going on with the footage, but you get a gut feeling that something’s off.

The black-and-white photographs are shots of water on ice, taken so close that they’re unrecognizable. They bring out the intricate movement of water and the delicate fracturing of ice.

“Once you start doing this, it keeps pulling you back,” said Marritz, talking about the filming process. The same could describe the viewing experience.

Marritz filmed the exhibition entirely on his Wayne County property, hence the title, “Where I Live.” When he came to Wayne County, he and his wife bought their home primarily for its natural beauty. “Most people buy real estate for the house. We bought it for this,” he said, referring to the installation. He considers the exhibition an invitation to share that space and time, bringing the audience onto the land that brought him here.

The exhibition will be up until Wednesday, August 31 at the Narrowsburg Union, located at 7 Erie Ave. The digital gallery is open daily, Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. More of Marritz’s work can be seen at marritz.com.
