LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The Cochecton Town Board discussed the results of a speed survey on County Road 114 at its meeting on August 10.

The board first discussed the possibility of a speed survey last year, responding to community worries about accidents along that road. It asked the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct a speed survey for the purpose of placing a speed limit on that road, hoping to decrease that limit from the state average of 55 miles per hour.

The DOT had completed that survey as of the August 10 board meeting, and had determined to set a 45 miles per hour speed limit along a portion of the road. The affected portion of the road begins 0.9 miles east of the intersection between County Road 114 and Route 97, and lasts for three miles.

“They did the whole thing,” summarized town attorney Karen Mannino. While the survey had been completed, the speed limit signs had not yet been posted. In the meantime, accidents continued along that stretch of road, said Mannino. “We’ve had two in the last month.”

“Hopefully, shortly, the signs will be up,” said supervisor Gary Maas.

Later in the meeting, Mannino asked if the town needed to do anything to ensure the signs were posted. Maas said the town did not: all the involved parties had been notified, and the county was responsible for posting the signs.
