As the director of the Big Eddy Film Festival (BEFF), which showcases new independent film in Narrowsburg each September, I always enjoy seeing our region represented on the big screen, and the small one.

Last summer, college student Ethan Wood was inspired to shoot in virtually every corner of the town of Tusten, from Narrowsburg’s Main Street to the old stone arch bridge to the Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp, for his project “Totally Tusten. This comprehensive seven-minute promotional video encapsulates the many reasons Narrowsburg has long been a destination for vacationers and re-locators (Wood’s family has a second home here). You can watch it on YouTube (www.youtube.com/ watch?v=9CTd4FBdWQQ), and it will soon be posted on the town’s official website.

If you want to see more beautiful cinematography shot locally, check out BEFF alumnus So Yong Kim’s new movie “Lovesong” (2016) on Netflix. Jena Malone and Riley Keough (Elvis Presley’s granddaughter) star as childhood friends who embark on a road trip through the Poconos. Much of this “delicate heartbreaker about friendship and desire” (The Hollywood Reporter) was shot in Lackawaxen and Milford, PA.

If 19th century horror films are more your style, the latest from Roscoe, NY resident John Adams will have its Catskills premiere on Saturday, January 20 at 6 p.m. at the Hurleyville Arts Center in Hurleyville. “The Hatred” is a 60-minute thriller starring the director’s daughter Zelda Adams as an orphan seeking revenge on a group of soldiers. The entire Adams family makes movies; their previous two films screened at the BEFF. It was shot primarily outdoors this winter with a stunning Sullivan County snowscape as the backdrop.

Finally, if you’re in the mood for a classic movie (and a great meal), Henning’s Local (6 Old County Rd., Cochecton Center)is hosting “Mom’s Meatloaf Movie Mondays” throughout the winter. They’ve installed a large screen in the dining room where they will project favorite films about motherhood. On Monday, January 22 at 7 p.m. they’ll show “Postcards from the Edge” (1990), based on Carrie Fisher’s book, starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. Bring Mom, and her dinner is free.
