KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — It was a race to the finish line at Bethel Speedway on Saturday, August 21 as Hurricane Henri approached the region. Plus, due to a concert later that day at Bethel Woods, all racing on the local oval was switched from the regular early-evening schedule to a matinee performance.

A highlight of the racing action was the steeds of steel from the East Coast TQ Midgets club, a sanctioned body of modern and vintage racers in the Northeast.

In a nutshell, TQ Midgets are scaled-down “three-quarter” versions of midget race cars from the 1930s, as single-seat, open-cockpit, open-wheel race cars.

The competition was divided into two classes, modern and vintage, the latter showcased by members of the Atlantic Coast Old Timers (ACOT), both of which are popular draws at the local asphalt oval.

“The action doesn’t stop,” said Andy Crane, the speedway’s spokesperson and race car driver, of the upcoming schedule. Here’s a short list of events:

September 4—Thunder Country 102.1 FM Childhood Cancer Awareness

September 11—Salute to Heroes first responder’s night

September 18—Championship Night

Highlights of the fall schedule include the Fall of ’69 Dirt Modified Championship, the annual Sullivan 100 for street stocks, and the Catskill Clash & Crash weekend on October 16 and 17, which will feature stock car racing and the Spinning Wheels Productions demolition derby series.
