Kauneonga Lake drowning

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — Just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, Kauneonga Lake Fire Department was dispatched to respond for a missing boater.

According to the department’s Facebook post, the boater,  later identified as Rikheil Patel, 31, by the New York State Police, was last seen on Sunday, May 23 at 1:05 p.m., and his location and direction of travel were unknown. Officers quickly put resources in the air, on land and in the water to begin the search. The search was called off after 9 p.m and resumed the next morning at 7 a.m. The New York State Police were able to recover the victim just after 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 27.

Assisting in the search were fire companies from White Lake, Rock Hill, Highland Lake, Lumberland Fire, Liberty, Narrowsburg and Jeffersonville. The Bethel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Sullivan County Dive and Rescue Team, Sullivan County Bureau of Fire, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, NYS Forest Ranger and Environmental Conservation Officers, and the Town of Bethel Constables were also on scene.

The officers and members of the Kauneonga Lake Fire Department would like to extend its sincerest condolences to the friends and family of this young man.
