The Battlefield Cross, erected by members of the Honesdale National Guard unit at Central Park, Honesdale for the 2022 Memorial Day program following the parade. The origin of the Battlefield Cross is unknown but many believe it dates to the civil war. Starting with the Gulf War in 1991, the battlefield cross evolved to the latest pictured version which includes a rifle, helmet, boots, and dog tags. The meanings of each component seem to vary with the consensus that the downward facing rifle means the service member was killed in action; the boots signify the service member's final march to battle; the dog tags symbolize "never to be forgotten."
