Hermit crab writing workshop at Callicoon library

CALLICOON, NY — All are invited to a writing workshop with poet Joyce Hayden at 12 noon on Saturday, September 7 at the Delaware Free Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library.

Why hermit crabs? Hermit crabs are not suited to one shell for life, the poet said. The crabs constantly seek their optimal environment, one that allows them to grow as they need to. Sometimes, in order to tell a difficult or vulnerable story, a unique “form” or structure must be found to contain the specific content.

In the workshop, participants will create a series of possible found forms for poems they might be interested in trying. Consider a poem written as a field guide entry, a course syllabus or a college application.

Participants will be provided with sample poems for guidance, time to write and an opportunity to share their new poem and discuss their writing experience.

Funds for the event were provided by the Statewide Community Regrant Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.

The library is located at 45 Lower Main St. Email wsplprograms@rcls.org with any questions.
