I first became acquainted with Dorothy Day as part of a seminary course on religious social activists. Beyond her work as a co-founder and editor of Catholic Worker, what I remember from her writing is that she and her daughter lived in the houses she established for those in need. She cooked, cleaned, and shared community with those whom she was dedicated to serving.
She strove for balance — doing the work that is needed and taking care of the spirit that replenishes us.
A proposal for Dorothy Day's canonization by the Catholic Church is moving through the papal process.
