Evidence of financial mismanagement matters

REALLY, RIVER REPORTER? Instead of explaining and expanding on the issues presented by the mailer, readers are subjected to a purported “attack” by the “klan,” which is completely slanted, unsubstantiated and inflammatory!

Don’t you think evidence of financial mismanagement and irresponsibility are important factors when considering a candidate? Don’t you think either ignorance of, or ignoring of, regulations designed to protect the public should be considered when making a choice about whom to support?

Why does it take “Citizens for Truth” to let us know this, instead of our local newspaper? Thank you “Citizens for Truth,” whoever you are!

And after seeing the insults and abuse that’s been heaped on the Haas family, no wonder “Citizens for Truth” prefers to remain anonymous.

Stop the hate!

I want to expect a detailed explanation in an unbiased manner of all issues brought out in the flyer in the next RR, even if it is too late for the election. At this critical moment in our nation’s history, when our very democracy is at risk due to lies, innuendo, and misinformation, we citizens deserve better.

And why has RR not brought out the excellent financial condition our town is now enjoying, thanks to current leadership?

Editor’s note: The River Reporter editorial team took the following steps in reporting the story “Mystery mailer,” published in the November 5-8 edition:

  • Contacted candidate targeted by the mailing for comment. Candidate responded in writing, and some of that response was quoted as written;
  • Researched and confirmed the existence of the mailer’s documents;
  • Contacted opposing candidate and printed his denial of involvement;
  • Contacted Citizens for Truth via the email address on the mailer for comment (no response was received);
  • Messaged Citizens for Truth on its Facebook page for comment (no response was received);
  • Investigated whether Citizens for Truth was registered in the NYS campaign finance disclosures database; and
  • Noted the fiduciary responsibility of the office of supervisor as put forth by the NYS Department of State.
