LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — In the opening round of play during the 13th annual Sullivan County BCANY vs. Cancer Classic, the Sullivan West boys’ basketball team defeated the Yellowjackets of Eldred 60-34.

The Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) held its hoops contests for boys’ and girls’ varsity bucketeers at SUNY Sullivan on February 11-12 “Down in the Bunker” at the local community college.

Since its inception, the Classic has donated more than $48,000 to the fight against cancer, with over $44,000 going to the oncology unit at Garnet Health Medical Center in Harris.

The 13th annual Cancer Classic was dedicated to Rick Ellison, who retired in 2020 from a 30-year teaching and coaching career, first at Jeff-Youngsville and then Sullivan West, to battle prostate cancer.

Ellison coached varsity boys’ basketball for 15 seasons, and also coached baseball, football, soccer and golf at modified, jayvee and varsity levels, and as one of several local sports helmsmen, pushed for the creation of varsity girls’ golf in Section IX.

Rick’s wife Glorianne, a former oncology nurse, is no stranger to cancer, as she is also a cancer survivor and co-founder of the Sullivan County Ride2Survive.

Ride2Survive – Sullivan County is a community-based volunteer organization that assists with transportation expenses for county residents or those receiving treatment locally, who are under the care of an oncologist, and who have been diagnosed with cancer or pre-malignant conditions.

Donations can be made to Ride2Survive – Sullivan County either online or by mail at Ride2Survive – Sullivan County, Inc., PO Box 282, Youngsville, NY 12791.

The Sullivan West Bulldogs (9-7) outgunned the Yellowjackets (0-11) in the first three frames (21-7, 18-9, 12-9), while in the final period the  squads each posted 9 points.

Sullivan West’s leading scorers were Chris Campanelli (13 points), Tariq Gambari (12), Matt Dubois (8, including 2 3-pointers) and Jacob Hubert (7). Gavin Hauschild and Jordan Akselrad posted 3-pointers.

Eldred’s leading scorers were Trai Kaufmann (12 points), Xavier Gonzalez (7), Matt Ranaudo (7). Three-pointers were scored by Kaufmann, Gonzalez and Ranaudo.

Stats from the free-throw line: SW 4/8 (50 percent); ECS 7/12 (58 percent).
