Callicoon, NY — Catskill Regional’s Grover M. Hermann Hospital recently announced that digital screening mammography and bone density testing are now available at its campus in Callicoon. These services are also available at the Catskill Regional Imaging Center located in Monticello in addition to other imaging services.
Digital mammography incorporates advanced imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images and lower radiation exposure assisting in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Digital images are sharper and more detailed than film images or traditional mammography allowing radiologists to zoom in on specific areas of concern and examine them for signs of early cancer.
A bone density test determines a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a serious condition that causes bones to become fragile and break. Testing allows for the early detection of osteoporosis and early treatment of bone loss.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), over 15,700 new cases of female breast cancer were diagnosed in New York State in 2011. The ACS recommends an annual screening mammography for all women ages 40 and over.
“Our goal is to provide exceptional care to those in our community and digital mammography enables us to deliver advanced care to our patients in the fight against breast cancer,” says Catskill Regional’s CEO, Dr. Gerard Galarneau. “This advanced technology will help us detect cancer early and save lives.”
