I was troubled to read the National Breast Cancer Foundation's assertion that plastic utensils do not cause breast cancer (River Reporter, October 6-12, 2022). I don't know what they mean by "plastic utensils," but to me, that category includes items used for cooking, like spatulas.
Meanwhile, plastic cookware may leach bisphenols, phthalates and PFAS, all of which are known endocrine disruptors that can cause breast, ovarian and prostate cancers, among a host of other harmful health effects.
I'm not clear why the National Breast Cancer Foundation would spread such misguided information. It would be far more helpful to warn us about the health risks associated with the toxic chemicals in all the plastic that surrounds us and that we use in our daily lives.
