ROSCOE, NY — One day at a time, one practice at a time, one game at a time, one season at a time.

One decade passes into another, and pretty soon you have almost 50 years coaching legions of Blue Devils teams at a rural high school tucked away in a quiet corner of Roscoe.

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — On Friday, June 15, Sullivan West High School recognized the stellar achievements of their student athletes on the various fields of play during their annual Spring Sports Awards ceremony organized by the athletic department, under the direction of athletic director David Franskevicz.

ELDRED, NY — It was really a story about perseverance in overcoming adversary.

Those roadblocks life sometimes throws in your way, even as a teenage athlete gearing up to graduation after taking to the field of athletic completion.

Sign me up, coach

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — On Wednesday, June 6, two graduating Sullivan West seniors signed on the dotted line, announcing their intent to attend a couple of nearby colleges where they will continue their education and further their sports careers.

Splash-down: Sullivan West’s Bryce Maopolske got his feet wet in the boys’ 3000-meter steeplechase (Division 2). The sophmore finished fourth, with a time of 10:51.34.

Kick starter

MIDDLETOWN, NY — "It’s all about the kick," said Sullivan West’s veteran track and field coach, Ron Bauer, as he sized up the student athletes competing in the second day of the Section IX state qualifier at Faller Field.

Overwound: Pine Plains’ Jacob Lydon took a mighty swing but missed, in the game between the Tri-Valley Bears and the Pine Plains Bombers on May 26. 

Bombers blast Bears in Class C showdown

SAUGERTIES, NY — Nuts to Norman Mailer. Tough guys can shed a few tears.

On Saturday, May 26 the Bears of Tri-Valley got shut out 9-0 by the Pine Plains Bombers in the Section IX Class C baseball final at Lorez Field, part of the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex.

Opposing forces: Tuxedo’s Dustin Labar takes off for home as Manor’s Dan D’Auria chases down an errant peg to third in the May 26 game between the Tuxedo Tornadoes and Wildcats of Livingston Manor.

Wildcats dominated by curveball wizard

SAUGERTIES, NY — On Saturday, May 26 it was all or nothing for the two teams taking to the Teddy Lorez Memorial Field to determine who would be crowned the 2018 Section IX Class D baseball champion.

And the winner was: the Tuxedo Tornadoes, as they blew past the number two-ranked Wildcats of Livingston Manor 9-1.

All out effort: Eldred’s Kayla Mass won the girls 3000 meter combined Class D race with a time of 11:24.38.

'Fast & Furious'

MIDDLETOWN, NY — It was Mike Mullally’s day in the blistering afternoon sun, as the Sullivan West senior and defending Empire State track star turned up the heat and smoked the competition in three events: 110m hurdles (14.20), 100m dash (11.24) and the 400m intermediate hurdles (58.45).

Out at first: Lady Spartans runner Alexa Roach didn’t quite make it against Bears first baseman Jordan Carmody.

Seward nicks Lady Bears

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — On Thursday, May 24 the Lady Spartans of S.S. Seward (9-5) defeated the Tri-Valley Lady Bears 2-1 to win the Section IX Class C semifinal softball game.

Tri-Valley (4-7) drew first blood in the opening frame in the wake of a walk and a hit by Jordan Carmody.
