JEEFFERSONVILLE, NY — On May 17, two varsity softball squads closed out their regular season of competition at Lauren Hughson Memorial Field. Even as one team won and the other lost, both cleared the bar to make it into the sectionals.

From the opening bell, the visiting Lady Raiders of Port Jervis (13-6 overall) ruled the day, as they scored 6 runs in the first inning, added a run in the next four frames, posted 2 in the sixth and closed out their domination with 4 more in the seventh  to put a 16-3 victory on 18 hits in the book.

Sullivan West (7-7 overall, 3-3 league) scored solo runs in the second, fourth and sixth frames on a total of 3 hits.

Sarah Beirne, coach of the Lady Raiders, noted that her predominately young team is composed of nine freshmen, an 11th-grader and five seniors (Rachel Duryea, Reagan Myers, Penny Jones, Molly Koening and Ally McElroy), with Duryea and Myers in the role of captains.

Of the seniors leading the younger players, Coach Beirne said, “They’ve been very helpful and guided them.”

Coach Durkin stepped up to the plate with a couple of thoughts on his team and the regular season, noting that for the first time in six years, they advanced to the sectionals.

“I’m very happy with the whole team. It’s a great group of young  ladies… They exceeded our expectations… The seniors and younger players all came together,” he said.
