Yellowjackets nip Bulldogs

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — For the home-team varsity swatters, it was definitely a step in the right direction.

On Monday, May 3, the Sullivan West Bulldogs (0-3) were edged 3-2 in a non-league homestand against the Yellowjackets of Eldred (1-0), but the slender derailment was a vast improvement over the team’s last outing of May 1, when they were pounded 21-2 by the Raiders of Port Jervis.

Comparing his team’s performance during these two outings, Bulldogs coach Bill Kirk, said, “I’m very happy with the defensive improvement and the way we played today.”

The winning pitcher for Eldred on Monday afternoon was Josh Warming, while Sullivan West’s Andrew Hubert got tagged with the loss.

Eldred’s Matt Ranaudo was two for four, posting two doubles and three runs batted in (RBI); Sullivan West’s Andrew Hubert was one for three with a run scored.

Reflecting on his crew’s first game of the season, Eldred’s coach Josh Santoro said, “I have a very young team this year. They have a lot of energy, and we’re looking for a real fun season.”

The Yellowjackets take to the field with five seniors: Dylan Jennings, Matt Dunker, Ty Smith, Chris Lilly and John McGarry.

At this point, Jennings serves as team captain, but Santoro noted, “I’m looking to add on that.”

Coach Kirk noted that the Bulldogs have “a lot of first-year starters... everybody lost a year (due to the pandemic), it’s been tough for everyone. We’re taking it step by step, pitch by pitch—trying to be the best we can be. I’m just so happy to be playing again, that’s the bottom line.”

The Bulldogs of 2021 have three standout returning players: seniors Owen Sager and Dan Hemmer, along with Ryan Sayers, a junior.

“They are our leaders,” said Kirk.
