ELDRED, NY — Even though the home team booters lost their first game of this pandemic-plagued season, the real story behind the scenes was that the Yellowjackets took to the field with absolutely no players in reserve on the bench.
That was it—nada. In case of an injury, it was “play on” or your team was down one, thus giving the opposition an edge in numbers.
Late in the match, Eldred’s Ethan Willams went down after a collision, but after a few minutes recuperating on the bench, he returned to the fray, putting his squad back to full strength.
On Wednesday afternoon, Eldred (0-1) hosted the Sullivan West Bulldogs (1-1) in a regular season boys’ varsity soccer game that saw the home team finally get enough players to fill the roster.
But despite a strong guts and determination effort, in the end, the Yellowjackets lost 2-1.
Eldred’s Pierce Weyant scored early in the first frame. In the second half, it was all Bulldogs: Will Connors at 29:06 and Ryan Mace at 26:09.
Stats: shots on goal (ECS 5, SW 15), keeper saves (ECS 13, SW 4), corner kicks (ECS 3, SW 6).
