Woodbourne couple to become subzero heroes for the Alzheimer’s Association

Posted

Due to the storm expected on Saturday, the Subzero Heroes fundraiser was rescheduled  to Sunday, March 13. The story below reflects the change.

HIGHLAND, NY — Granted, the water is actually above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or they’d be jumping onto ice.

But that doesn’t mean becoming a Subzero Hero is a piece of cake.

On Sunday, March 13, Terry and Theresa Grafmuller of Woodbourne plan to jump into ice-cold Berean Lake and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Hudson Valley chapter. This will be the Grafmullers’ eighth year as participants.

Terry Grafmuller said that jumping initially involved a bit of a learning process for the couple.

“Our first year that we jumped, we didn’t know what to expect. We learned the less clothes, the better,” he said.

“Other team members asked us, should we start taking cold showers? You don’t want that pain any more than you have to. Just take that pain that day,” he said.

Culinary Institute chef Scott Swartz and his students will be at Berean Lake with soup for participants, and hot chocolate with marshmallows from Hudson Valley Marshmallow Company will be available. As in recent years, there will also be a costume contest, so Heroes are invited to get creative with their attire. The Grafmullers jump with Team Strike Out Alz.

“It’s never crossed my mind not to do it. It’s what I consider a lifelong event,” Terry said. “Every year as we are waiting in line to do the jump, my wife says, ‘We’ll never do this again,’ but every year we do it.”

Participants must raise at least $200 to jump into the water as Heroes, or they can register as Sidekicks, who don’t jump but help participants raise money and recruit team members.

Registration is open at https://bit.ly/35ox14U. On the day of the event, registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the jumping starts at 11 a.m.
