After more than 20 years of service to Sullivan County, I once again seek to serve our neighbors and friends: old, new and some, as yet, unmet. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, my wife and I live in the Town of Callicoon on her family’s farm. Much as it has for generations, it is the farm that sustained us and our family honed our work ethic and informed our point of view.
I’m running for the Sullivan County Legislature from District 5, which twists and turns throughout the Towns of Callicoon, Delaware and Fremont, ending in White Sulphur Springs, Swan Lake and Ferndale in the Town of Liberty.
I am a fearless advocate for improving access to healthcare and our presently dismal health outcomes; sharing county sales-tax revenue with our towns; fair and prompt contract negotiations, and expanding infrastructure, including wireless and broadband availability. I support stable, sustainable and environmentally sound economic development, tourism promotion and, of course, farming and family farmers.
Though I recently retired, my career as a probation department supervisor empowered me to advocate for crime victims’ rights, hold offenders accountable, work to improve conditions for employees and promote public safety. As interim acting director of probation, I mastered the county budget process, resource allocation, planning, grant preparation and state aid applications.
Public and private sector employment experience, passion for public service and compassion for people make me the best candidate for the challenges we all face. The legislature’s fundamental goal should be to provide services, protect taxpayers and to keep moving our district and our county forward, improving conditions for all our residents. Politics should play no role.
My name is Lou Setren. I ask for your vote on November 5. You’ll find me on Democratic “Row A” and Rural Heritage “Row I.”
