HONESDALE, PA — Surviving monsoon-like rains and spells of August-like temperatures, the raised beds of the Stourbridge Primary Center’s new vegetable gardening program produced a bounty of lettuce.
Grown and harvested thirty-five days after planting by the school’s eight second-grade classes, enough lettuce was produced to include a serving in the school lunch of every Stourbridge student (455 total) on the last full day of the school year. There was plenty to go around, including for those that requested second and third helpings.
The experience of the second-grade students in this comprehensive gardening project is an extension of the science and writing curriculum at Stourbridge. Students learn a valuable and practical life skill, make an important connection to the natural world, gain first-hand experience in growing and providing nutritious food and simply enjoy themselves in the hands-on, experiential project.
Supporters that made this program possible include the Honesdale PTA, Home Depot’s Team Depot program, Honesdale Agway, Wayne Highlands Middle School, Wayne Highlands Food Services, Johnny’s Select Seeds, Zyliss, Beech Grove Organic Growers Supply, Willow Wisp Organic Farm, Salem Mountain Farms and Otter Creek Environmental Education Services.
