LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — SUNY Sullivan student Gavin Simpson, from Livingston Manor, NY, is the 2021 recipient of the New York State Sheriff’s Institute Criminal Justice Scholarship.
On February 9, county sheriff Michael Schiff presented Simpson with the $500 scholarship, which is awarded each year to one student who is majoring in criminal justice, police science or a similar program.
After graduating from high school, Simpson spent three years in the U.S. Army and is currently a member of the National Guard. He is enrolled in SUNY Sullivan’s criminal justice program, preparing for a career in law enforcement.
The ceremony was attended by Simpson, Schiff, undersheriff Eric Chaboty, SUNY Sullivan president Jay Quaintance, Criminal Justice professor Robert Eiler and SUNY Sullivan dean Rosemarie Hanofee.
“It’s nice to see young people with an interest in policing,” said Schiff. “He served his country in the military and now wants to serve the people and the community.”
“I feel very honored to get this award, and I’d like to thank the sheriff and undersheriff for taking the time out of their day to come to campus and present it to me,” said Simpson. He thanked Eiler for recommending him for the award.
