Lumberland Fire Department contains damage

GLEN SPEY, NY — In less than a week, Lumberland Fire Department personnel responded to calls on two different brisk, clear mornings, containing the damage on one home and averting damage to another.

On February 19, it responded to a call of a structure fire on Ogden Road, arriving in time to confine most of the physical loss to the home but not before three household dogs and a cat succumbed to the blaze.

Despite the quick response of firefighters, the homeowners and their two children were not able to stay in their home after the fire. A GoFundMe page was established to provide assistance.

Lumberland was assisted by crew and equipment from Highland Lake, Yulan, Sparrowbush, Shohola and White Lake fire departments; American Legion Ambulance Service personnel and equipment were also on hand.

On a similarly clear morning, Lumberland trucks and personnel responded to a call of a propane gas leak by a neighbor who detected a strong gas odor from the road while walking his dogs. The house is a second home in the Glen Spey community of Lake DeVenoge. The house was ventilated and the propane service provider was called to investigate. The odor was determined to be emitted from a near-empty tank.
