Local writer’s book up for classic horror award

WURTSBORO, NY — Local author Bill Fleck has been nominated for a Rondo Award in the Best Book (nonfiction) category for the year 2021.

His book, “Chaney’s Baby,” is a deep dive into a troubled time in the life of actor Lon Chaney Jr., best known for playing the Wolf Man in classic Universal movies of the 1940s.

The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are named for Rondo Hatton, who—like Chaney—starred in 1940s monster movies (most notably “The Brute Man” in 1946). Hatton, a journalist before he started acting, suffered from acromegaly—a disease of the pituitary gland that results in the enlargement of the hands, feet, and certain facial features—and died at the age of 51 in 1946.

“I’m certainly blown away by the nomination,” Fleck said. “I had no idea that the committee even knew my work existed.”

“The Rondos have been fandom’s only classic horror awards—decided by fans, for fans,” according to the ballot instructions. “Every nominee is being recognized for significant achievements in 2021” (for a full list of categories and nominations—as well as instructions regarding how to vote—go here: www.rondoaward.com).

Fleck faces some stiff competition in the nonfiction book category, going up against tomes by Gregory William Mank and Gary D. Rhodes, among other noted film scholars.

“Just to be on the same list with those writers is a win,” Fleck said. “I’ve been reading their stuff for years!”

“Chaney’s Baby” is available on amazon.com in paperback or as an e-book. Signed copies can be purchased at Kristt Kelly Office Systems, 369 E. Broadway in Monticello. In addition, as the weather warms up, Fleck plans to do readings and book signings in the tri-state area.

Votes for the Rondo Awards can be emailed to taraco@aol.com. The deadline is Sunday, April 17.
