ELDRED, NY — On Tuesday, April 6, the Lady Yellowjackets of Eldred defeated the visiting Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs in a hard-fought girls’ varsity soccer match.
If the numbers had ruled the game, Sullivan West would have outposted the home team in several categories: shots (SW 22, ECS 9), shots on goal (SW 16, ECS 5) and even corner kicks, with one in the record book.
It must have been an updated version of the “new math,” as Eldred took the match 2-1 at the end of regulation play to win their first game of the season, featuring the “new normal” of a couple of mid-half mask breaks, so the booters can catch a breath of fresh air.
Keeper saves: Eldred’s Grace Loretto (1), Sullivan West’s Riley Ernst (2).
At 6:05 into the first half, Lenae Kelty was up to her old tricks, as she scored on an assist from Makenzie Simonsel.
Later in the first frame, at the 31:56 mark, Sullivan West’s Anna Bernas tied it up by burning one past the Lady Yellowjackets goalie on a blistering penalty kick.
In the second frame, Eldred was credited with the match-winning goal off Sullivan West’s veteran keeper Riley Ernst.
