Firefighters from six companies responded to a fire in the flats on the morning of January 9. Smoke billowed out of a large hole in the roof of the structure as firefighters worked to make the building safe enough to inspect.
Dave Casey, chief of the Narrowsburg Fire Department, said on the morning of the fire the cause was not yet known, but fire investigators and NYS Police would be looking into the matter. He said the fire was contained to the garage, and there were no injuries.
The garage is owned by John and Yoke Digiorgio.
Ed Kraus, who every day opens the nearby Big Eddy Car Wash and Laundromat, said the previous night there was also a fire in the garbage shed that belongs to the three-family apartment house next to the garage. This was confirmed by others in the community.
Kraus said he walked by the garage at 7 a.m. and there was no fire. About two hours later, he saw smoke coming from the building.
NYS Police are investigating.
