The Wayne County Area Agency on Aging wants to make sure that the public is aware that when Senior Centers are closed due to cold weather conditions, they are generally still available as a warming station should consumers need. They do want older adults to avoid unnecessary trips outdoors during extreme cold, but want older adults to be aware that even though there are no scheduled activities or meals available at the Senior Center, the Senior Center can be available as a warming station, if needed. Call the Wayne County Area Agency on Aging 570/253-4262 to confirm hours of availability or if you are aware of an older adult in need of assistance due to the extremely cold weather conditions.
Older adults are more vulnerable to hypothermia, which occurs when a person’s body temperature drops below normal and stays low for a prolonged period of time. Older adults are also at an increased risk because their body’s response to cold can be diminished by certain illnesses (i.e. diabetes) or medications. Speak to your doctor if these circumstances pertain to you.
