Butterfly Bike Ride and Seed Toss

BARRYVILLE, NY — On Saturday, September 29, celebrate the role of pollinators in fertilizing our local food sources and say, “Adios, Monarchs,” as these charismatic and endangered pollinators migrate to their wintering grounds in Mexico. Mariachi music and Mexican cuisine will highlight the fiesta at the farmers’ market at the finish of the ride.

The bike ride begins at 10 a.m. at the Zane Grey Museum (parking lot) in Lackawaxen, PA. Riders will cross the Roebling Bridge and turn onto NYS Route 97, the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, where they can toss the provided seed balls (of clay, milkweed and wildflowers) to enhance monarch habitat along the banks of the Delaware River. They will then turn onto River Road, where they can be joined by walkers, wheel chairs, baby strollers, skate boarders, walkers with walkers, or bikers with training wheels and proceed to the Barryville Farmers’ Market behind the River Market. There, the Mariachi Viva Mexico band will start playing at 11 a.m., when free healthy snacks of tacos, fresh pressed juices and desserts—using ingredients from the market vendors—will be distributed. A healthy-goodies piñata follows at 12 noon.

The distance is a 4.6 mile ride or a .6 mile walk. Participants are encouraged to come dressed as pollinators: butterfly, bee, bat, beetle, or bird. Reber River Trips will return riders and bikes to their cars following the festivities. Action Bikes and Outdoor of Milford, PA is offering discounted rentals, including helmets.
