LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in the cafeteria of Sullivan West High School on Wednesday, February 21 from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is especially important because so far this winter, people have been deterred from coming out to give blood by frigid weather and snow days. Although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10% do so each year.
Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded. A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days
And there will be a bonus for this blood drive: the Sullivan West Student Council seniors also receive scholarship money each year based on the units of blood collected. Sign up at www.redcrossblood.org.
