Cannonsville hydro plans

DEPOSIT, NY — The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will host two area public meetings on December 14 to share additional information and answer questions about the revised plans for a hydroelectric plant at Cannonsville Reservoir.

According to a DEP statement, this revised plan for hydroelectric power at Cannonsville Reservoir includes a smaller powerhouse than the original concept that was developed in 2009, avoiding an artesian aquifer discovered downstream of the dam during subsequent engineering assessments. The artesian aquifer does not affect the structural integrity of the dam, but did require relocating the power plant. The revised plan will draw water into turbines from an available pipe inside the existing West Delaware Release Chamber. The DEP will not release additional water from Cannonsville Reservoir to generate electricity.

The $16.8 million project will include two 3-megawatt generators inside a 4,400-square-foot powerhouse adjacent to the West Delaware Release Chamber. The turbines will generate an estimated 32,000-megawatt hours of electricity each year—enough to power 3,547 homes, or the equivalent of taking 5,068 passenger vehicles off the road. The plant will avoid the emission of 23,666 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. For the entire statement, visit tinyurl.com/y7gpgnhj .

Those meetings will be held at the following locations and times: 9 a.m. at the Deposit State Theater, 148 Front St., Deposit NY, and 12:30 p.m. at the Upper Delaware Council office, 211 Bridge St.,Narrowsburg, NY.

Two Liberty men arrested after stabbing

The officer got out of his car and one of the men, Carlos Williams, fled into a nearby apartment building. The other man, Barry Bowser, 50, had a stab wound to his head.

An investigation revealed that Bowser had unlawfully entered Williams’ apartment and struck him with a two by four. Williams then chased Bowser out of the building and stabbed him in the head with a knife. Williams fled into the apartment building where he attempted to conceal the knife he had used by hiding it in the building. Bowser was arrested after being released from the hospital that evening. Williams was charged with assault in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and tampering with physical evidence—all felonies.

Bowser was charged with burglary in the second degree, attempted assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree—all felonies. Both men were arraigned in the Town of Liberty court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail without bail.
