Metzger seeks CPV health impacts

MIDDLETOWN, NY — The office of state Sen. Jen Metzger announced on February 18 that it is gathering information about possible adverse health impacts related to the operation of the Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) Valley Energy Center in Wawayanda.

In consultation with health experts, Metzger’s office has developed a 14-question survey that her office will use to inform the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) about any potential relationship between the power plant’s operation and adverse health effects. With this information, the agencies may take appropriate steps to verify causality and protect the public.

CPV is currently between permits. The DEC denied renewal of the state air facilities permit and required that the company apply for a federal Title V Clean Air Act permit. The gas-fired power plant is currently operating in the absence of a valid permit as the result of an August 14, 2018 court order, which Metzger believes puts public health and the environment at unnecessary risk.

Metzger is asking anyone who believes that their health has been impacted by the operation of CPV to fill out the survey online at

www.bit.ly/CPVsurveyTRR. People may also contact her at 845/344-3311, email at metzgersd42@gmail.com, or visit her Middletown office at 201 Dolson Ave, Suite F, Middletown, NY 10940. The office is also offering to send a representative to meet with people at their homes or places of work.
