Pedal steel guitar at concert

BETHEL, NY — Sullivan County musician Jay Ganz will give a concert performance on pedal steel guitar on Wednesday, July 4 at the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church. Ganz has been performing in bands for over 30 years. The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of guitar with pedals and levers added to allow for more varied and complex music. It was first used in Hawaii in the 19th century, and has the ability to play deep vibratos—characteristics similar to the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with American country music.

Playing the pedal steel has unique physical requirements, requiring coordination of both hands, both feet and both knees. In addition to American country music and Hawaiian music, the instrument is common in sacred music (called Sacred Steel), jazz, Nigerian music and Indian music.

Little Sparrow will host the concert, and perform a selection of folk and old time country music with Ganz, showcasing the pedal steels guitar’s unique sound. Doors open at 5 p.m. and music starts at 6 p.m.. There will be light snacks, and attendees are invited to bring an appetizer to share. The church is located at 1972 State Route 17B, Bethel, New York. Free-will donations will be accepted. Everyone is welcome For more information call 845/671-9548.
