CALLICOON CENTER, NY — Apple Pond Farm holds a weekly Saturday event titled “Farming with Kids” every Saturday from May 5 to September 29, from 10 to 11 a.m.. It is hands-on, a chance to introduce children to the wonders of a working farm. Children do some real farm chores, which change seasonally: milking goats, feeding chickens and turkeys, planting, picking vegetables, grooming horses. Activities vary. The cost for adults is $8 per person, $6 for children (under three are admitted free). No reservations needed, but a five-person minimum is required to conduct the event, so bring your family and friends. Payment by cash or check only (credit cards are not accepted).

The land that Apple Pond Farm sits on was first farmed in 1865; Sonja Hedlund and Dick Riseling have operated the farm since 1973. For many years, the 80 acres were farmed with draft horses, Belgians and North American Spotted draft horses. Horses raked hay, spread manure, cultivated cornfields and produced more than 100 foals. These days, chickens, goats, and sheep are raised for eggs, meat and wool. A chemical-free, ecologically friendly cold frame and unheated hoop house supply food throughout the year. Almost 90% of the electricity used on the farm comes from solar panels and a wind turbine.
