LOOKOUT, PA — The Equinunk Historical Society (EHS) will open the Cleveland Museum at the Joel Hill Sawmill on Saturday, June 30 at 11 a.m. A dedication of the new exhibit will occur at 1 p.m.
Thomas Cleveland, resident of NEPA and former teacher in the Hancock, NY school system, is the man who made the museum possible, by making the difficult decision to donate his extensive collection of industrial-age equipment to EHS so it could be conserved and displayed to the public and to students in particular.
Moving the huge and very heavy equipment was an extraordinary feat. It took the cooperation of community-minded businessmen including L.J. Harrie Transport, J.R.Wells Construction and several rugged volunteers to accomplish the task. The cost of the new building was underwritten by a grant from the Mee Foundation of Hancock, NY. Employees of Bill Pykus Excavating performed the site preparation.
Working long hours, the self-dubbed, loyal “Brotherhood of the Mill,” a dedicated group of volunteers who keep the Joel Hill Sawmill running several days a year, managed to get some pieces running and ready for viewing by June 30; attendees will have a chance to see them live and in action.
