Mourning cloak butterflies are unique in the fact that they overwinter as adults in cracks and crevices. Occasionally, on a mild winter day, they might emerge for a short flight before returning to their winter spot. They emerge early, usually as the winter snow melts; they are the first butterfly species to be seen in the spring. They are one of the longest-lived butterflies in the region, with a lifespan just short of a full year.

Spring snapshot: flora and fauna

Spring has sprung across the region and there has been a mix of mild and sunny days as well as some cold, windy days, with low temperatures getting into the 20s. As I write this, there are no big … more

The next time you hear the wind blowing before you even get out of bed, go grab a kite, head to the park, and give the kite a fly.

“Snow fleas” can be seen in the Upper Delaware River region during late winter and early spring. The harmless arthropods are known as springtails, earning the name due to their ability to spring out of harm’s way with the aid of a forked organ called a furcula with which they can propel themselves to a distance of 50-100 times their body length. Here they can be seen individually as well as clustered together in the characteristic blue-gray puddle.

‘Fleas’ in the forest

This eagle, a local resident with a nest on the Delaware River, is carrying what appears to be a trout to its nest to feed a couple of young. Trout favor the clear and shallow rapids of local rivers and streams. Trout are wary of shadows and movement nearby, but eagles can stoop and grab very quickly. Other fish species that go to eagle young include bass, shad and eels.
