May awakenings

The spring season is moving along after some below-average temperatures. Some warmer days occurred during the latter part of April. When the month of May arrives, temperatures get warmer still, and with the warmth comes budding trees, blooming flowers and the first appearance of many species of animals.

An early walk yields some new species of birds calling, and more birds calling in general. Birds such as the wood thrush or hermit thrush have arrived from their wintering spots and are calling; spring is the time for courtship. There might be some new sounds coming from nearby ponds and lakes in May. Green frogs typically start their breeding calls in May in most areas, and pickerel frogs intensify their calling after a few early starters in April.

More reptiles can be seen crossing the road this month. Aside from a variety of snakes, turtles might be spotted crossing roads in May. Snapping turtles are often seen on land and roads during May and June as they travel to breeding ponds or nest locations. Wood turtles are also seen during May as they cross roads, usually near streams.

Talking about things in the road: Fawns start making their first appearance this month. They can’t walk right after birth and it might appear that the mother has abandoned her fawn, but in reality, the female adult stands away from the fawn so as not to draw attention to the helpless fawn until the fawn gains enough strength in its legs to stand and walk. Take care driving during this time, as fawns have no conception of cars.

Drive safely and enjoy the warm weather.
