PIKE COUNTY, PA — As the demand for home-delivered meals continues to grow, funding from the federal government and the PA Lottery covers only a portion of the total cost of the Home Delivered Meal program, leaving the Pike County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) heavily dependent on donations.
The suggested contribution from a senior for a meal is $3, but even this can be challenging for older adults on a fixed income.
To help close the funding gap, the AAA offers a “Sponsor a Senior” program. A $20 donation provides a local senior with nutritious meals for one week. If $20 isn’t possible, any amount is appreciated.
Donations can be made on the AAA website of the Pike County website under the “Sponsor a Senior” header, www.pikepa.org/aaa.
Or volunteer
The Area Agency on Aging is always looking for dedicated volunteers. Whether you’re helping to deliver meals, assisting at senior centers or participating in the Friendly Caller program, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Contact the office at 570/775-5550 to learn about the volunteer opportunities available. (If you’re in Wayne County, call the AAA there at 570/253-5970. And if you’re across the river in Sullivan County, NY, call the Office for the Aging at 845/807-0241.)
