A salon of his own

BARRYVILLE, NY — Despite the bitter cold on Saturday, January 15, it was warm and bubbly as Keith Nicholson cut the ribbon on his new hair salon. A New York City-based hair stylist, Nicholson has been living in Barryville since 2003.

Asked why he was opening now, he said, “I was going back and forth to the city for all those years, living here and working the salon in the city. I had a handful of clients up here, and I just decided it was time to have a space of my own.”

Nicholson’s relationship to hair cutting is a simple story: “I have been cutting hair, always, since I was nine. I went to beauty school very early, became an educator, and artistic director of salons. I have moved around a lot, Los Angeles, Miami, back to New York.”

Now he is proprietor of The Highlands Salon, located next to Barryville Bottle in the small strip mall that fronts Route 97, just south of the blinker.

“It’s a good profession for me,” Nicholson said. “I like helping people and I like watching people grow and become who they are. As children grow up and become adults, it’s great to see.”

“Salons and barbershops are great gathering places in towns, albeit small or large,” said Greater Barryville Chamber of Commerce board member Johnny Pizzolato. “They give everyone the chance to connect. Plus it’s always wonderful for the community for there to be top urban talent in a rural setting.

“It’s so exciting and there is more to come,” he said.
