GLENS FALLS, NY — “No hope” was the taunt of a spirited Greenwood cheering section early in the first quarter of Saturday’s New York State Class D Girls Basketball Championship game. By half-time their chant had become ironically prophetic as Eldred’s methodical destruction of the Western Region champions left little doubt of the ultimate outcome.
After years of frustration in post-season play, Ken Bjorn’s Yellowjackets became New York State Class D Champions over the weekend, blowing out their final two opponents by a lopsided combined margin of 60 points. The final score in Saturday afternoon’s championship game was 72-50.
Team leader, All-America and state career-scoring leader Tammi Reiss netted 44 points, 27 of those in first half play. “We were a little shaky. We came out flat and let them get in the game,” Reiss said afterwards.
