Voters cite closeness with candidates in Cochecton primaries

COCHECTON, NY — Voters flocked to the polls on primary day, June 23, to vote for Republican candidates for town supervisor and superintendent of highways.

Voting inspector Barbara told the River Reporter that she had seen a good turnout in the polls. Out of 1,100 registered voters, 167 cast a vote for supervisor in the primaries.

One voter, Dillon Northrup, said his vote for a town supervisor candidate was for Scott Goodman for helping him out with some legal troubles.

“I know every vote counts, so I did my part,” Northrup told the River Reporter.

Northrup emphasized that because he and his fiance have three kids, voting for someone with family values is important to him.

Northrup’s fiance Katrina said they would also be voting Jeffrey Daub as the Republican candidate for superintendent of highways.

“Jeff is my uncle—not actually-; he watched me grow up, so he’s part of the family,” she stated, regarding incumbent Daub. “He’s always been into helping people and doing better for everybody.”

Katrina added that she doesn’t enjoy voting, and was encouraged by her grandparents to do so.

“The town’s a lot better than a few of them in Sullivan County,” she said, expressing contentment with the Town of Cochecton.

Voter Dylan Ginty also expressed that he also had a close relationship with one of the candidates. Ginty told the River Reporter that Daub was his family member, and that he picked a name that looked nice for his town supervisor vote.

Ginty echoed Katrina’s sentiments towards the town. “I’m pretty happy with it," he said. "I’ve lived here for 20 years."

The primary ended with Edwin Grund securing the Republican line for town supervisor, with 114 votes over Goodman’s 53. Kevin Esselman has secured the Republican line over incumbent Daub, with a 93 to 68 vote.

“He is very excited to serve the town,” Maryann Oumrim, Cochecton’s town clerk, said regarding Grund.
