Big dreams, local impact

In Sullivan County, we know that big dreams often start on small streets.

That truth rings loud and clear throughout the communities of the Upper Delaware region, where a passion for craft, creativity and community often blooms into something much more. From the artisan shop that began at a local farmers’ market to the outdoor gear company that started out in a basement, Sullivan County’s small businesses represent more than just commerce—they reflect the spirit and values of the people who live here.

May is National Small Business Month, and it’s the perfect opportunity to recognize and celebrate the entrepreneurs who turn their dreams into cornerstones of our local economy.

At the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, we proudly serve over 500 businesses, most of them small—and many of them family-run. These business owners are not only creating jobs; they’re mentoring students, sponsoring community events, and re-investing in the places we all call home.

But owning a small business isn’t without its challenges. Economic uncertainty, workforce shortages and rising costs continue to put pressure on even the most established entrepreneurs. That’s why the chamber remains focused on advocacy, training and connection through programs like Leadership Sullivan, community mixers and our Chamber Foundation.

Supporting small business is one of the most tangible ways we can strengthen our community. So this month, I invite you to do something simple but powerful: Shop locally. Leave a review. Recommend a local service. Or just stop by and thank a small business owner for all they do.

Behind every local business is a dreamer—and behind every dreamer is a community that can help lift them up.

Ashley Leavitt is the president and CEO of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce in New York State.
