ALBANY, NY — On August 29, five student members of the Sullivan West FFA chapter proudly represented the district at the New York State Fair by competing in the Wildlife ID and Tree ID Career Development Events (CDEs).
Junior Division achievements
Lillian Bressler, Rachel McCarthy and Victoria Skuthan participated in the Junior Wildlife ID contest, demonstrating their knowledge in species identification and conservation.
Junior Division
Lillian Bressler earned second place; Rachel McCarthy secured fourth place and Victoria Skuthan achieved 10th place. All three received individual ribbons, and the team of Lillian and Rachel earned first place overall as a team.
Senior Division
Alison McCarthy and Mackenzie Bernas competed in both the Senior Tree ID and Senior Wildlife ID categories, showcasing an advanced understanding of New York’s forestry and wildlife systems. In Senior Tree ID, Alison placed fourth; in Senior Wildlife ID, Alison placed second, with Alison and Mackenzie’s team securing second place overall.
“These students exemplify the dedication, skill and passion that define Sullivan West’s agricultural education program,” said Padraic McCarthy, agriculture and science teacher and FFA advisor. “We are incredibly proud of their performance and professionalism at a statewide level.” The CDEs at the New York State Fair offer real-world challenges and experiences, helping FFA students strengthen skills that support future careers in agriculture, environmental science and natural resources.
The Sullivan West FFA Chapter is part of the national FFA organization, which promotes premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
