LIBERTY, NY — District Attorney Meagan Galligan announced that Michael Boyles, 32, of Swan Lake, was sentenced by the Sullivan County Court to serve 10 years in prison, plus five years of post-release supervision, for forcibly stealing beer, cigarettes and lighters from the Mobil gas station on North Main Street in the Village of Liberty while armed with a knife in 2020. Boyles pled guilty to the robbery immediately before trial on October 21, 2021; however, subsequent motions delayed sentencing until June 24.

Boyles was arrested by members of the Village of Liberty Police Department within minutes of the report of the robbery at approximately 10:30 p.m. on March 29, 2020. Video surveillance from the station established that Boyles entered the store and immediately approached the clerk’s counter holding an open knife, causing the clerk to flee outside. Boyles then stole cigarettes, lighters and beer. He has been continuously incarcerated since his arrest.

DA Galligan said, “I am pleased that, despite this defendant’s vulgar outbursts in court, sentencing in this case moved forward and the Court imposed a term that will safeguard Sullivan County from this defendant’s dangerous conduct for many years. I commend the members of the Village of Liberty Police Department who acted quickly and followed through with the prosecution of this case to bring justice to the victim of this crime and our community.”

Boyles remains incarcerated at the Sullivan County Jail awaiting transport to the New York State Department of Corrections.
