MONTICELLO, NY — Although harness racing at the Mighty M isn’t what is used to be, the Standardbred action is beamed around the globe, and legendary local drivers of the sport still proudly ride their spidery two-wheeled carts into the winner’s circle.

As the dusty windows of the once-mighty grandstands overlooking the famous track bear silent witness to events of the past, the racing action continues to keep the sport alive for the future.

If you allow your imagination to wander a bit, you can envision thousands of avid horse racing fans cheering on their favorites, hoping for that magic ticket to a brass-ring first-place finish.

On Thursday, May 15, the Monticello Raceway featured 11 races in the afternoon, as the region’s recent rain-rich weather took a short break, allowing harness racing to take place under partly cloudy skies.
