SAVE Act only saves Trump

Posted

Donald Trump calls it like it isn’t—again. The SAVE Act, now being considered by the Senate, does not “safeguard voter eligibility.” It suppresses it.

This bill should be called “SAVE Trump’s Bacon Act.”  If proof of citizenship (a passport or birth certificate) is required, if mail-in ballots and voting machines are banned, if voter rolls are frequently purged, and if elected officials who register non-citizens are sent to prison, then only Trump’s power and agenda are safeguarded and, he hopes, guaranteed.

He does not want to be a loser (despite all evidence to the contrary, he continues to pursue 2020 election recounts). With the SAVE Act, fewer people can vote against him.

We already have laws in place to ensure that only American citizens are voting. As it is, citizens already struggle to get to the polls on a Tuesday, a working day, and many do not vote because of registration difficulty, inaccessible polls and voting misinformation. These are the real problems Congress should be addressing. In a representative democracy, voters hold the power and will not be fooled into giving it away by a bill that pretends to respect them.

Let’s hope the U.S. Senate will not be fooled either.
