TOWN OF HIGHLAND, NY — The Town of Highland Planning Board voted to extend the Camp FIMFO application period until Tuesday, March 11, giving the public more time to weigh in on Camp FIMFO’s project proposal to transform the tenting site Kittatinny Campground in Barryville into a large-scale resort-style campground.
The public comment period began after the Highland Planning Board’s unanimous vote to accept an updated Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) on November 20 and was originally set to close on January 10.
Camp FIMFO representatives accepted the planning board’s decision to extend the public comment period.
This extension comes after ongoing requests from the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, an organization that has been consistently against the project’s approval, to extend the public comment period, citing improper notice announcements and time frame given it was over the holiday season.
If the project is approved, Northgate Resorts will invest $40-plus million in a major transformation of the tenting site Kittatinny Campground in Barryville into a large resort-style destination. The proposal includes the installation of 148 RV park models in addition to another 64 proposed permanently placed structures. Each park model will have its own sewer and water hookup and will remain permanently stationed at a specific location at the campground.
The project also encompasses new attractions, including an aquatic play area, a mini-golf course, a bouncing pillow and sports courts. An updated septic system will replace the current, deteriorating system.
A two-hour public comment hearing attended by approximately 100 people was held on December 18.
Written public comments on the DEIS will be accepted until the extended period of March 11, and can be submitted to planningboardzba@townofhighlandny.com.
