UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — Michael Sherman has joined Penn State Extension as an educator on the livestock team, based in Lycoming County.
In this role, he will work with beef cattle and small ruminant producers throughout north-central Pennsylvania and beyond, providing research-based education and practical solutions to help strengthen livestock operations.
“Over the course of nearly 24 years of federal service, I worked with producers across the commonwealth, helping administer USDA programs while supporting the success and sustainability of Pennsylvania agricultural operations,” he said.
He also operates a registered beef cattle operation that incorporates artificial insemination and embryo transfer in a forage-based production environment.
Sherman said his goal as a livestock extension educator is to help producers develop operations that are both profitable and sustainable. He noted that topics such as genetic selection, forage management, environmental limitations and long-term business planning often are overlooked but can have a significant impact on profitability and resilience.
With a background in carcass evaluation and cattle production, Sherman said he is particularly interested in meat science and carcass economics.
To learn more, email Sherman at mls239@psu.edu or call 570/329-4005.
“I also welcome information about local livestock events and opportunities to connect with producers of all sizes and production systems,” he said.
