HONESDALE, PA — The Human Resources Foundation (HRF) recently awarded Arrowhead & Shepherds Camp in Susquehanna County with a grant for an ADA-accessible transport vehicle for its campus.
Arrowhead & Shepherds Camp is a year-round, full-care, overnight camp for adults with developmental disabilities, and also offers specialized 1:1 sessions for campers who require individualized care.
Each year, the camp serves over 350 campers who join them for one- or two-week sessions.
The camp is celebrating “over 60 years of creating the best home away from home, a vacation full of lifelong friends and memories, and the unforgettable experience of camp,” HRF said.
The stated mission of HRF is to enhance the quality of life and well-being of individuals with disabilities throughout Northeast PA, including those over age 55 who are seeking to independently age in place. “HRF works to build communities that embrace accessibility and inclusive spaces so that everyone may live life to their fullest potential,” the group said. To that end, they fund Hoyer lifts, portable lifts, stair glides, ramps, bathroom modifications and other adaptive equipment. HRF serves Wayne, Pike, Monroe, Carbon, Lackawanna and Susquehanna counties.
The Aging in Place program assists people 55 and up who are living below HUD’s low-income levels and are experiencing difficulty staying in their homes due to physical limitations. Many can’t afford transportation for medical visits or other essential in-home adaptive equipment not covered by insurance. According to executive director Daniel Card, “Our goal is to provide these individuals not only with caring assistance, but with a sense of independence and dignity. Our grants cover all financial aspects of the project, from initial visit to estimates to installation.”
