LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — “This is incredibly overwhelming,” said John Spath of the February 11 community outpouring in support of the first annual Audra Sipple-Spath Scholarship Fund benefit basketball day
It was held in honor of his late wife at the Sullivan West High School gym.
Audra Lynn was a veteran first-grade teacher at the Livingston Manor elementary school, who passed on April 5, 2022 at the age of 54.
“She was an incredible person I was married to for 25 years plus,” her husband said. “Very outgoing, very competitive—she always wanted her students to do the very best they could.”
Their twin daughters, Karlee and Kara, both now 21 years old, graduated from Sullivan West in 2019.
Karlee is a senior at SUNY Cortland studying sociology, while Kara is majoring in athletic training, with the goal of “becoming an athletic trainer for the New York Giants, so stick around,” said Spath.
The Livingston Manor board recently approved the scholarship fund, with the goal of selecting two Manor seniors each year to be chosen, based in part upon criteria including “GPAs, generosity, kindness and working hard,” said Barb Smith, chairperson of the new fund. Preference will be given to those students going into teaching after graduation.
The final game of the multi-match-up hoop fest pitted the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (9-3), coached by Pat Donovan, against the Lady Wildcats of Livingston Manor (8-8), coached by Maggie Fitzpatrick.
Sullivan West outpaced Manor in the first three frames (15-4, 9-0, 9-3). In the fourth period, the Lady Wildcats rebounded 8-4.
At the buzzer, the Lady Bulldogs won 37-15.
