ELDRED, NY — Taking a welcome break from the recent lousy weather that caused multiple cancellations in local sports, Eldred’s Lady Yellowjackets defeated the Lady Lions of Chapel Field Christian Schools 6-3 in a conference varsity softball homestand on Monday, May 19.
The home team posted a run in the opening frame, and in the second inning, both squads sent two runners across the plate.
In the wake of a scoreless third, each team posted a run in the fourth, and in the final two frames it was all Eldred, 4-7, as they scored 2 runs in each inning to close out the game with a victory.
In the 6th frame, Emma Bisland led off with a walk, stole 2 and scored on a passed ball.
In the 7th and final frame, Sydney Furler led off with a single, purloined a base on a passed ball, and scored off on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Gonzalez to draw down the scoring curtain on a chilly wind-swept field.
This softball season, the Lady Yellowjackets have no seniors, and the rest of the roster is composed of 11 juniors, two sophomores and a pair of freshmen.
Captains are Sydney Furler, a catcher, and Olivia Gonzalez, a shortstop. Both are juniors.
Eldred’s winning pitcher posted 13 strikeouts, while Chapel Field’s Megan Winter fanned 10 and walked 5.
Earlier in this season of swats, the Lady Lions defeated Eldred 5-4. According to Lady Yellowjackets coach Bill Furler, that was due to some “silly plays we made in the field.” But on Monday, turnabout was fair play, aided in large part by Sydney Furler going three-for-three and 2 RBIs.
