Correctional facility death ruled suicide

HONESDALE, PA — A man incarcerated at the Wayne County Correctional Facility died at 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 6. According to Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell, the manner of death was suicide and the cause was asphyxia due to hanging.

The deceased's name is Jeffrey Birbeck. He was 44 years old.

"Upon being discovered unresponsive in his cell by correctional facility staff, emergency response began and resuscitation efforts were initiated.  The decedent was transferred via ambulance, CPR in progress, from the correctional facility to Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency department," Howell said in a statement.

Birbeck was pronounced dead by a Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency department physician. Dr. Charles Siebert, a forensic pathologist, performed an autopsy on Tuesday, December 8.
